The Princely Knight

“Do you think you’re some sort of princess?” A young lad with scatter black locks for hair glared down. Behind him was two girls and another boy, all rather young. On the ground was a young girl, a bit more smaller than the others but looked around their age if not older. Her hair was loose and in a vibrant silky green color. She had on a dress that covered up to her knees, and stockings to cover up whatever skin was visible on her legs.

Her eyes seemed dulled out, uninterested, cold. Even so, there was still a glint of fear in them as she looked up to the other four. Her dirtied hands were fisted on the grass, as her arms trembled. One of the little girls stuck out her tongue. “You’re the same as us! Stop acting like you’re royal or something!”

“I-- I’m not…” The girl on the ground only lowered her head. Allowing her bowl cut bangs to cast a shadow over her face.

This was just an average day for her.

It’s part of the main reason why she despises going outside of her house.

Outside of the four walls that protects her.

Out in the open, things like this happens. Pain, either to her or others.

Either way, it was a lose-lose situation. It was best that she remained isolated from the other children, even so--- that still got their attention. “Hey!!”

The children all looked to the voice behind him. The girl on the ground knew it wasn’t an adult, so she wasn’t saved. She didn’t turn back and remained her gaze on the ground. She tensed her whole body, waiting for an attack from the new incomer.

She felt the winds shift towards behind her, but the attack completely flew over her head and hit the standing four. When she looked up with surprised solemn eyes, she saw a fierce orange haired boy, much taller than her, and taller than the other four. He might be older. He was in a defensive stance, as if guarding something but can spring an attack at any moment.

Eh…? Isn’t he… standing in front of me…? Is he…….?!

That stance is for her. He was defending her, willing to fight in her place. The pure rage in his eyes that he shot to the other four was angry for her. This boy was doing everything she should have in her place. Throughout her life, she was called a princess or heiress by many different people. Their tones were laced with jealousy or resentment. So she learned, no matter how gentle or blunt it was, being called such a thing was bad.

Even still.

“Get away from her!” The boy shouted, facing the sky and thrusting his body to lash out a spray of water. The other reacted differently, but all ran away. “Hrrrrmm…!” He grumbled and half growled. His body tensing as if he was stopping himself from chasing them.

Even still.

The young lad seemed to have calm down completely as he heard shifting behind him. His previous fierce emotion completely vanished once he remembered the girl behind him. He turned around with a bounce, and a smile on his face. “Hey! Are you alright?” He asked, reaching out his hand for her to take

Even still… I think maybe… if was really was one. You’d… be my prince.

Stubbornness

“Guh!” The orange haired boy flinched and slapped his chest to make the sting go away. “Say, Hikari, do you see any Oran Berries here?” He asked to the shorter girl walking by his side.

She glanced around, her low ponytail swaying with every movement. Children often made fun of his bright colored hair, but no one can beat the Subomine when it came to that. Her hair was a vibrant green color that shined at direct sunlight. “… No.” She replied, finishing her scan.

“Hmmmrrk!” The boy’s humming became pained as he clenched his teeth. The girl looked up, her bangs covering only her forehead neatly. She saw the dark circle swallowing up the boy’s scarlet orange eyes. It wasn’t from lack of sleep, he was running extremely low on energy.

She’s seen that look, those dark indigo circles.

Fear overtook her solemn dull eyes. Quickly, the girl--Hikari looked up at the sky and parted her arms from her side slightly. The air… it’s… warmer… it’s…

Her sudden panic paralyzed her frozen. Her eyes widen as tears welled up at it’s corners. It was happening again. With all the chaos that was happening, she hadn’t noticed when the winter turned into spring. She hadn’t realized toxic poison were releasing itself… and effected her friend.

The boy had been walking ahead, not noticing the girl stopping. His twin tails flickered and twitched every so often. It wasn’t the same swing of playfulness like before. His entire body looked so defeated, especially from the back. A back the girl looked up too so much ever since the day they met.

“I--it’s happening…”

The lad heard Hikari’s voice from afar and turned back. The confusion was clearer on his face than the steady pain he felt. “Onh.. Rii-chan?” He walked back to the girl who had her trembling palms in front of her, inching them closer to her terrified eyes. “What is it?” He asked, looking down as he managed to get in front of her.

Hikari buried her hands in her face, her tiny shoulders trembling and sending quakes down her spine. It was clear that she was crying, but it panicked the boy that he didn’t know over what. He repeated what she said earlier, and tried to see if there anything she mentioned beforehand.

“Bad things happen.. To those I’ve come to care for…”

“Ah…” The boy looked down at the girl, his awkwardly parted air shifted slightly over his bangs. “Is the bad things happening now?”

He saw the girl flinch, as if she shrunk a foot. He couldn’t hear her sobs or gasps, he couldn’t hear anything from her. She was doing her silent cry, the one she did when she wanted to be alone.

“Hmmm…” The boy hummed, then smothered a grunt that slipped after feeling another pang. “…Hehhh… Keheheh..!”

“Eh…?” Hikari slowly removed her hands from her face to sneak a glance up. She saw the orange head chuckling with his boyish grin. Her body flinched again when she felt the boy’s hand on top of her head.

“I’m glad then! If bad things are happening to me now, it means you really really care now!” He laughed after that, grinning all the way forward and tugging her along. As they walked, the girl--Hikari couldn’t get over his reaction. She didn’t understand why he didn’t leave yet. He was in fatal danger. If he wasn’t going to break away, she had too.

And yet, she couldn’t bring herself too.

Instead she breathlessly chuckled. “… Stubborn.”

He heard her comment, but decided to reply to it the next time she said it.

Determination

“If not Swift Swim, then what ability do you have?” Then curious twelve year old asked.

“Water Veil.”

“Wedding Veil?”

“WATER!”

“Wedding Water?”

“You’re doing that on purpose!!” Jun fumed at the now chuckling Koki. Jun’s twin tails swished to the sides irritatedly. He was leaning on his shoulders lazily against the desk Koki was sitting down at. With a now bored hum, he looked around the laboratory. “Isn’t she suppose to be here by now?” He asked, scratching the ring around his neck.

Koki looked around the laboratory--doubting Jun’s eyesight in front of him--before going back to his paperwork. “Guess she’s not.”

“Yeah, I see that. Know where she is?” The half blond, half orange locks, asked.

The Water type decided to search for the Grass type after Koki shook his head with an apologetic look. Once he was outside, he heard an uproar happening down the road that leads to Futuba. He decided to check it out, making his way through the crowd.

He saw a news channel crew, looking rather terrified. He didn’t completely understand the situation, but from the looks of it. He could tell that the gang of Gaurdies he saw on the news the other day were making a scene--most likely being provoked by the camera crew. “Did you just try to use Grasswhistle on us?”

“Ahhea!”

Half way turning back, Jun heard a familiar gasp. One that was half way breathless, and half way a yelp. He only knew one person who can make such a painfully dull sound. He darted back in front of the crowd that watched and saw the Grass type he had been looking for.

Red petals sprouting from her wrist and peeling off her hands. Blue on the other. Thorns on top of vibrant green hair that looked like a crown. Not to mention, said green hair was in a unique hold-back-sideburn clips style. Petite curves that went with petite legs. A Roselia, not just any, but his Roselia. “Rii-chan…!”

The boy’s scarlet orange eyes widen and shrunk with a sudden burst of rage. He shifted all his weight swiftly onto his right leg that stood on his palm foot, and bended knees. The loose but quick motion of his body summoned the water in the air without a hitch. His twin tails lashed out and glowed as it visibly absorbed light from around it.

With a stern dash, Jun broke out in a Aqua Jet.

Hikari jolted with a small surprise upon seeing the fire type who held her blue wrist up, get rammed from the side with water. She stumbled to the side, but regained balance quick enough to nonchalantly watch her hyper Bouysel pull off his famous joint move.

As he rammed the fire type down, the water around him splattered as he twisted in the air. A slow twirl became rapid with the help of his Sonic Boom tails. The Gaurdie yelped from the double attack and no breaks. “Tch..!” Jun landed gently on his palm feet. He quickly turned his torso upon hearing a growling roar and a gasp from his childhood friend.

He saw her back up, and panicked slightly to what attack to use in defense of the ember attacks the other Gaurdie was preparing for. He shifted his weight to his right leg again, preparing for another sprint. Hikari had nervously brought her hands together, fingers disappearing as her rose petals became entangled.

He sprinted as the Gaurdie roared out his fierce Ember attack. Hikari had spread her arms apart a second before Jun had grabbed her waist in his sprint and violently shoved her out of the fire’s way. The impact of her head and the ground brought her into a daze. “Ah!” Jun mentally scolded himself for not thinking that one through.

Then again, when has he ever thought something through?

This time, two other Gaurdie members decided to join for a triple Ember. “Haahh!?” Jun widen his eyes at this. Glancing to Hikari, he knew she wouldn’t be able to dodge with him in time--therefore he gambled everything on this next stunt of his. He moved his hands that were lifting him up to wrap underneath the grass type. Pulling himself down for a tight embrace and gripped onto the girl’s shoulder edges.

The tight hold brought Hikari out of her painful daze. The embrace felt different from the other times. This one felt… wet.

A small opening in Jun’s messy hair, Hikari hardly saw the Ember’s being vanished in mid-air as it was a foot away from making contact with them both. “Eh?”

“Gaarrhh!” Jun coughed out, releasing Hikari right afterwards and holding himself up with a bit struggle. “Aggh.. I--it worked!”

“What.. Was that, what did you just do?” Hikari ignored their positions, she was much more curious in what he did to make the fire evaporate like that.

Jun chuckle at her, with that boyish grin he never grew out of. “Water Veil.”

“Eh?” Hikari recalled Jun’s special ability being something called that. It allowed him to heal from the Burn Status or something. “T--that’s an ability-- not a move…”

“Weelllll…~” Jun chuckled again, this time a tad more sheepishly. The same chuckle he did whenever he did something bad and was trying to get away with it.

“Y--! You stubborn idiot!” Was this really what he had been doing all week? “Using one’s abilities in such a way can cause major health damage!”

Jun casually sat next to her, allowing her to sit up from the ground. “Aahh, I prefer the term ‘Determined Fool’.”

Hikari shook her head once, placing her attention back to the pack of fire types. She fisted her red petal arm, then punched the ground with her side. The moment she had done so, thin vines rapidly grew all around the Gaurdie’s bodies. Jun recognized this move as ‘Leech Seed’.  So that’s why she didn’t move.

Contagious

“Curse my inability to eat Pecha Berries!” Jun dramatically gasp and half wept as he roughly sat on the ground.

He heard Hikari sigh out as she came back with a wet cloth. “You have the ability to consume it-- you just don’t want to.”

Jun flailed his arms once, childishly pouting at his nurse for the day. “They’re so bitter!”

Hikari only sighed again, and placed the wet cloth on the half blond’s forehead. It helped that he fell on his back afterwards from looking up too high. “I believe your first experience with Pecha berries were rotten. You shouldn’t hold that one time against all of them.”

“What do you mean?” Jun moved the cloth upper, so he can see his friend prepare something for him.

“I mean, Pecha berries are sweet. Not bitter.”

“Hahh? Really?!” Jun sat back up at this. He brought his hand to his chin and tried to remember the first time he was given a Pecha berry. There was a slight chance, he mis-remembered how the berry looked like and mistook it for another.

Not that he was ever going to admit that to her though. She had enough embarrassing memories of his to use against him. “Hmmm…” Jun clicked a thought together and chuckled lightly.

Hikari turned her attention to him at this chuckle. It was one of his rare mature-sounding ones. “J--Jun? What is it?”

“Hmmm” Jun then smiled at her with that boyish charm of his. “Nothing, I just thinking how it’s a lot like you in a way.” Hikari tilted her head, her dull eyes glinting with a small curious shine. “First I thought you were kind of bitter back before I knew you. But you turned out to be actually sweet.”

“..h…” Hikari felt her face blush at the gentle expression he gave her. She turned her face back forward, allowing her hair to cover up her face. His words also made her heart flutter for a second. For once, she couldn’t express the sudden take back like she usually did. “……” She wanted to ask the dyed blond if this meant he would give a Pecha berry another try.

Instead, she placed down everything she held and stood up gently. Jun hummed with a slight confusion tone as he watched her get up. He was half concern that he may have offended her. He let his gaze go back forward once Hikari was walking behind him, and out of his peripheral vision.

Her house was always quiet, it sometimes bugged him. But at the same time, he reflected her nicely. She was practically the only one who lived in this house, everything in it reflected her.

Without warning, Jun’s gasp as he felt Hikari wrap her arms around his stomach and press her body against his back. “H--Hikari..?”

Her cheek was against his shoulder broad. Upon hearing her name, she tried to push herself harder against him, her arms trembling slightly. The water type only remained frozen, embarrassed by the sudden action and concern to why she’s doing it.

That’s when he felt it.

The comfortable feeling he got sometimes when they would sit in silence and watch the clouds. Or when they were walking side by side to the town over for some shopping. The calm presence he felt when being alone with her at her house. He felt it, ten times stronger, physically flowing into his body.

She was doing that somehow.

She was actively, making him feel this warmth.

How?

What is she doing exactly?

The randomized pangs he had gotten started to get carried away by the flowing warmth that spread through him. His poison was status was lifting--no, melting in her embrace. Was she absorbing back the poison pollen? No… he would have felt something being sucked out of him… so what…

Jun recalled a couple times, Hikari looking like she was asleep as she recovered herself wit her ability. Her expression was just so sincere and tranquil. Kind of like how he was feeling now.

“… Natural Cure?”

“….. yes…”

“Ahaahh… now who’s stubborn.”

“I prefer the term ‘determined.’”

First Step

“Okay…” The little girl Subomine waved hesitantly. She watched her parents exit the door, leaving her alone in the house. They did this often, it wasn’t anything new. She preferred to stay indoors anyways.

“Are they gone?”

Hikari gasped in a tiny shriek. She jumped and back up from the voice behind her. There stood the boy who had defended her from those bullies a week ago. The boy who asked to be her friend the next day at school. She had declined him, though. She hadn’t seem him after that. But now… “W--wha-.. H--how did you.. Get in here?”

He shrugged, holding his arms behind his head. “Climbed a window.”

They were all locked…!! Hikari held her hands together and close to her chest. Why was someone from the outside here in her home? Her one safe place? “U--eh..” She was lost to what she should or could say.

The boy finished his scan around the house and then looked seriously at the tiny girl. Well, as serious as he could managed. There was something about his expression that gave away that he wasn’t exactly what he tried to be. “Are you a heiress?”

“H--ah..?”

The orange haired lad unfolded his arms and scratched his ring collar. “I mean, you’re really pretty… uh.. Wait what was the word I looked up… umm.. Ah!” He pointed a finger up and then smiled. “Beautiful! You’re really beautiful!”

“A--ahhh…” Now that he mentioned it, heiress was just another word for princess.

Even still. She couldn’t find it, where was the bitterness in his words? In his eyes?

“I figured maybe… your parents didn’t want you to have friends or something. Because of the whole uhh” He paused to thnk about his next words. “Important things are nonsense and nonsense are important”

She did not understand one bit of that.

“I thought maybe, you were a princess or something.”

She felt her body jolt as he said that. That one word she hated so much. Then again, didn’t he sounded bored just now? Not a mockery tone, but as if it was completely normal if she was or not.

When he didn’t continue talking, she realized he was waiting for an answer. “Ah--… I--no I’m not…”

“Oh, I see.” He smiled. “So can we be friends, then?”

Hikari widen her dulled eyes that were filled with half panic and half fear. Was that really why he was here? To befriend her? She lowered her gaze, unable to look at the boy anymore. “My parents.. Aren’t the reason why I can’t have friends.” He took another step back, getting closer to the door that was locked. “It’s just… I don’t…. want them…”

The boy cocked his head. “Why not?”

The was an awkward silence that lingered before the girl’s mental panic pushed her to talk again. “Bad things happen to those… I’ve come to care for… so if you were my friend then…. Bad things would happen to you. Since I would have come to care about you…”

She glanced up to see the boy look defeatedly down. She then flinch back when sharply brought his gaze straight to her. “Bad things are going to happen to me either way, though.”

“H--huhh…?”

The boy chuckled and walked closer to her. “Well, you don’t want to be my friend because I’ll get hurt right?” She gave a shy nod at that. “That means you care about me.”

She jolted at this, she wondered over this. He continued anyways despite her shock. “So I’m gonna get hurt anyways!” He cheered out with a chuckle. Hikari was starting to feel exhausted at his enthusiasm. “I know I won’t mind it though, as long as you can make it worth it.”

The grass type’s confusion increased when he held out his hand in front of her. “So… can we be friends, please?”

The boyish smile he gave her and small laugh made it nearly impossible for her to bring sadness to him again. She looked down, holding her hands together tightly. “….. Tsu…”

“Two?”

“Tsuga…bara… Hikari.”

The boy stared at her dumbfounded for a moment. He then broke out into a huge grin that made the young girl flusteredly gaze back down.

“Atome Jun! Nice to meet you, Rii-chan~!”
